I Wore Almost Entirely Neutrals to NYC Last Week—See My 5 Outfits

If I had to pick one fashion motto to capture the current zeitgeist, it would be “less is more.” This certainly applies to the fashion industry’s growing awareness around sustainability and also to the “make-under” look that’s recently become popular. I took style cues from both when dressing for New York Fashion Week this season, leaning on neutrals and re-wearing some of my closet staples (see if you can spot the turtleneck I wore last season and basically every single week since thenand borrowing samples rather than buying new pieces that fit the “fashion week version” of myself but not my real life. I made sure to stay at my favorite NYC spot, Hotel Hugo, which is conveniently walking distance to many of the shows. It doesn’t hurt that it also has a special rooftop bar and extra-friendly staff that’s willing to navigate a flurry of NYFW deliveries and invites. When I couldn’t hoof it, BMW kindly provided transportation, as it partnered with IMG for this season’s NYFW. Scroll down to see the five outfits I wore for a week in New York. While still “photographable” with standout elements, they are decidedly more pared-back and neutral-focused than seasons past.

Who said black and brown don’t go together? I almost opted for a black purse here, but senior market editor Bobby Schuessler (pictured) said the rich caramel would be a nice contrast. He was right.

While I could have easily opted for blue jeans here,  cream wide-leg denim was a bit more unexpected. A chocolate patent coat was the perfect choice to protect me from the elements.

So while pistachio isn’t quite a neutral, the pastel is rather understated and paired perfectly with cream.

Shop the matching Draped Twill Pleated Wide-Leg Cargo Pants ($445).

This outfit is closest to what I’d wear in my everyday life in Los Angeles. Coated denim, flat boots, and a trench coat are my new rainy-day trifecta.

A camel confection! This is actually a jacket-and-skirt combo made by a sustainable L.A. designer. Bonus: It’s on sale.
